Report & Data

Our Report & Data

Our annual ESG reporting covers our process for, and progress in, addressing environmental, social and governance topics that are relevant to the company and our stakeholders. This report covers 2020 enterprise‑wide information and data for PT INVENT INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED, unless otherwise noted.

Materiality

A formal materiality process defines our ESG priorities, shapes our strategy, guides our goal setting, and defines our resource allocation and reporting. We start by reviewing our business priorities and conducting a peer analysis. Then, based on both quantitative and qualitative research and feedback from internal and external stakeholders, we identify and capture priority topics in a matrix that provides a snapshot of the ESG challenges and opportunities of highest importance. Our most material ESG topics — the non‑financial topics that are of greatest impact to our business and our stakeholders — fall in the upper right‑hand quadrant of the materiality matrix.

Our most recent materiality assessment, refreshed in 2020, identifies our most important ESG issues as:

  • Materials
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Emissions
  • Effluents and Waste
  • Environmental Compliance
  • Supplier Environmental Assessment
  • Employment
  • Labor/Management Relations
  • Diversity and Equal Opportunity
  • Public Policy
  • Marketing and Labelling
  • Socio-economic Compliance
  • Women Empowerment

We are committed to reporting on these topics and to enhancing our disclosures on these issues whenever possible. This report outlines our management approach, data and initiatives for each of these material topics. It is compiled and reviewed by our subject matter experts and our sustainability leadership council.

We believe that an ESG policy and an effective ESG management system will guide us to identify potential Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) risks early on when planning for an investment.

Policy Statement

This ESG policy document forms the core of Soulflower’s beliefs. This document sets out Soulflower’s approach to the management of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, including the principles which Soulflower aspires to, and the procedures it has implemented to integrate these principles into its activities. All Soulflower’s staff are required to adhere to the ESG Policy. This Policy will be known, understood and integrated at all levels and will also include external service providers that are involved in its implementation.

  1. Guiding Principles

Soulflower is committed to comply with its ESG policy, applicable laws of the land and to be responsive to existing and emerging ESG concerns on a proactive basis.

We are committed in our approach that involves integrating environment, social and governance ESG risks and opportunities into the investments made through our private equity funds. Our ESG policy will be interpreted in accordance with national laws and regulations for all the investments made by Soulflower.

We are also aligned with the international principles on ESG requirements to help us manage and improve our environmental and social performance through an outcomes-based approach while providing a solid base for our stakeholders to increase the sustainability of their business operations.

  1. Objective

Key objectives of the ESG policy are

  • Implement systems and procedures to identify and manage environmental, social and governance risks and impacts including resource consumption, emissions, social factors, bribery, corruption, conflicts of interest and transparency within the invested companies.
  • Create a governance structure that monitors and provides oversight on key ESG risk areas and enables effective stakeholder engagement;
  • Promote a culture amongst suppliers to transparently disclose their performance to Soulflower on their Environmental and Social performance/ action plans that are in line with the standards set within this ESG Policy;

These objectives will be accomplished by:

  • Ensuring that all manufacturing activities are compliant with National laws, rules and regulations as a minimum; and also, in a manner that is consistent with the applicable ESG principles and standards.
  • Ensuring that ESG risks associated with all manufacturing, are rationally assessed by Soulflower by utilizing internal and external subject matter expertise;
  • Ensuring that the management of the company understands the commitments and key requirements under Soulflower and its ESG Policy requirements.

Reporting Our Progress

Our annual ESG report aligns with leading ESG and Sustainability frameworks including:

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI): The GRI Standards are fundamental to our reporting process. See our GRI Content Index, which is aligned to the core option, for an overview of disclosures on our material ESG topics.

A Note About Our Data

Throughout this report, we define our organizational boundary using the financial control approach and report on Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the GHG Protocol Initiative’s guidelines. We believe this most accurately reflects the direct impact of our operational footprint. The company’s Scope 3 product‑related emissions represent those emissions associated with the product use phase and cover greater than __% of the revenue associated with the diverse product portfolio.

Data is presented in absolute and normalized by company revenue (intensity) terms. We use the A410000 Trade Revenue (Net) to normalize environmental and energy data which provides valuable insights into the level of eco‑efficiency across our diversified operations and allows benchmarking against the performance of other capital goods companies. Our safety data is normalized by the number of hours worked. Our environmental, health and safety data are assured by a third party.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) seek to solve the biggest and most complex challenges of our time. In line with that ambition, we set our Sustainability Commitments to tackle important issues such as climate change and gender equality. We have deep expertise and the scale to implement industry‑changing innovations. We want our commitments to inspire others and call on those within our industry to join us.

Gender Equality (SDG 5)

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls:

To support these goals, we are working across the full value chain to improve where and how we recruit talent, how we develop and promote from within, and how we hold our leaders accountable in creating opportunity for all. Additionally, through our seven‑step strategic sourcing process, we avoid using price as the primary driver for supplier selection. Instead, we consider a range of factors as agreed upon by a cross‑functional team, including supplier diversity, quality and risk.

Water & Sanitation (SDG 6)

People need access to both clean drinking water and acceptable forms of sanitation. Only 7 in 10 people have access to safe drinking water, and 6 in 10 lack proper sanitation facilities. Fortunately, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of the global population using an improved drinking water source has increased from 76 per cent to 90 per cent. The Water and Sanitation goal seeks to ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

Decent Work & Economic Growth (SDG 8)

The way people work is changing, and AI and other technologies will replace many existing jobs over the next decade. Although the global unemployment rate hit a new low in 2017, 61 percent of workers are involved in some form of informal employment. The Decent Work and Economic Growth goal is designed to foster sustainable and equitable economic growth for all workers. This means achieving higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including through a focus on high-value added and labour-intensive sectors. Soulflower has employed manual labour and all our products are handmade which helps in boosting high levels of economic productivity and labour-intensive work.

Responsible Consumption & Production (SDG 12)

Current levels of rich-world consumption are unsustainable from a climate standpoint. The developed world needs to lead the way by reinventing many of its industries, to decrease the carbon impact and the material waste costs associated with many facets now considered normal in modern life. From fossil fuels, to packaging, to agricultural phosphorous: if available energy, clean air, and clean water are rights that humanity intends to pass onto future generations, the developed world must aggressively support its transitions towards greener energy and increasingly closed-circle product lifecycles. Soulflower has adopted 100% biodegradable packaging to reduce the carbon footprint and increase the reusability of the paper-based packaging boxes.

Life on Land (SDG 15)

Soulflower is a furry clan, the company shelters over 20 cats and dogs in its office premises and has been feeding over 200 strays in and around Andheri, Airport, Marol, Bandra – Bandstand and Carter Road. The company ensures that the meals fed to the strays are as advised by vets and include a balance of chicken, eggs, rice, and pulses.

Topic Specific Standards

The topics below represent a broad range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues that are important to Soulflower and our stakeholders.

  1. Position on Community Impact

Corporations, by the very nature of their existence and activities, have an impact on our society and environment and play a role in the welfare and well-being of communities. Beyond their core business activities, corporations can also help create a better world and improve the quality of life for communities through additional strategic philanthropic initiatives that go beyond commercial activities. At Soulflower, we are sensitive towards things that cannot speak – Skin, Animals and Nature. We are committed to going beyond our immediate business interests by contributing to advancing health and wellbeing in the communities in which we live and work. We do this through the following activities:

  1. Animal Care

The company shelters over 20 cats and dogs in its office premises and has been feeding over 200 strays in and around Andheri, Airport, Marol, Bandra – Bandstand, and Carter Road. The company ensures that the meals fed to the strays are as advised by vets and include a balance of chicken, eggs, rice, and pulses.

  1. Call to Kindness

Call to Kindness is just a small way to give back to the society we live in and to make it a happier place. The initiative of Call to Kindness has made its reach to thousands of fighter children at TATA Memorial, where we spread happiness to Cancer-affected children. Our team with Duhita Foundation spends the whole day with them, play and dance with them, thus making unforgettable memories for them and us! If you would like to join us on one of these trips, please get in touch, now!

What we do?

We wish our customers on their birthdays every year and give them an opportunity to be kind on their special day. Their personal note to one such fighter child is delivered by us along with a colourful dining gift set. Customers pay nothing. Every year thousands of children are benefited by this joint initiative.

What started as a small idea has now spread like wildfire and our customer feels passionate that they are touching a child's life on their very special day. For us, this satisfaction and happiness is more important than the sale. In India, where kindness is so deeply woven into the culture and where karma dictates every action, you must activate the "giving" sentiment in every possible way.

  1. Women Empowerment

Women Empowerment is a mission which Soulflower always strives for, we provide employment and work benefits to our female employees. We are growing day by day by actively getting involved in granting employment to deprived women and enable them to live with dignity and earn their own living. We also make it a point to skill them and secure their future with their own efforts. We believe in:

Equal Opportunity | Equal Pay | Equal Say

At Soulflower, every day is a Women’s Day. Our Sense, Sensibility and Sensitivity comes from them.

Soulflower has come up with #MakeHerSmile, an event wherein our customers have to put a smile on the face of their wonder woman. “A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear” so let’s put a smile on her face.

  1. Farm to Face

We believe that best results in skincare come from the earth and not a lab, any topical product should originate from the right source and hence we have established farms wherein raw materials of our products (Herbs / Plants and other ingredients) are sourced from these farms. The Farm to Face is an initiative where we provide employment, training, and education to the farmworkers.

  1. Humane Care and Use of Animals Policy

Soulflower does not test cosmetic or personal care products or ingredients on animals anywhere in the world. By partnering with top research organizations around the world to develop and promote alternative testing technology, we are committed to both ensuring the safety of our consumers, and to making the strides necessary to eliminate the need to test any cosmetic or personal care products or ingredients on animals. We expect the standards for animal care and use for external service providers to follow the same standards as applicable by local and national laws and regulations. Mistreatment of animals or failure to abide by this policy is a serious violation and may be grounds for dismissal or termination of contracts with service providers. All our products are made with pure and natural ingredients and are 100% Vegetarian.

  1. Position on Water and Waste Management

Environmental stewardship is an important part of the overall responsibility of manufacturers to advance sustainable development and preserve planetary integrity for current and future generations. Proactive water and waste management are fundamental elements of a corporate sustainability strategy. Equally, economies realized through resource efficiency support business resilience and continuity. As India’s First Preservative Free Brand, we recognize our role in helping to conserve and protect natural resources. We know that human health is inextricably linked to the health of the planet—we can’t have healthy people and communities without a healthy environment. To this end, we are committed to marshalling our expertise, resources and partnerships to reduce the environmental footprint of our operations, our products and our extended supply chain while advancing better health for all.

Water Management

We work to minimize our impacts on the planet through responsible use of water. Soulflower also recognizes the human right to water, which, as defined by the United Nations, entitles everyone to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic use.

Our water stewardship strategy and practices include:

Monitoring our water withdrawal: Soulflower monitors all water withdrawals as part of our approach to water efficiency and water risk management. A standard requirement of all Soulflower facilities is to determine, at least annually, the acceptability of drinking water supply by applying local, regional, or national drinking water-quality standards. Where there are no such standards, the World Health Organization guidelines are applied. Water that is used in process operations is subject to quality verification as determined by our quality assurance requirements.

Reducing water demand and increasing water reuse: We work to improve water efficiency across our operations by reducing water demand, increasing water reuse and prioritizing water management actions using a risk-based approach that accounts for location-specific water risks at our sites worldwide. Such measures include manufacturing and engineering improvements, for example:

  • Upgrading water chillers and HVAC installations to the most water-efficient options;
  • Applying alternative technologies for cooling towers to reduce water dependence;
  • Applying leak detection technologies to support elimination of leaks;
  • Designing manufacturing product cycles for water reuse; and
  • Investing in modern facilities to achieve high-quality wastewater treatment.

Careful management of wastewater: We apply strict wastewater controls in terms of quantity and quality of wastewater at all our facilities both to meet regulatory requirements and to voluntarily minimize our impacts on the environment. All our facilities have wastewater treatment installations or use approved third-party operations for treatment. Further, we control wastewater quality in line with our commitment to minimize the impact of personal care products in water waste streams.

Positive action to reduce waste and increase recyclability:

Our operations around the world adopt a wide range of practices to avoid, reduce, reuse or recycle waste wherever possible. Such practices include, for example:

  • Applying lean manufacturing principles at our facilities to reduce waste generation at the source;
  • Identifying specific waste streams for different materials and segregating waste at all our facilities;
  • Engaging teams at manufacturing sites to collaborate for waste reduction in the manufacturing process, and partnering with external organizations to identify and progress environmentally positive reuse or disposal options;
  • Adopting innovative technology for waste streams to recover materials that can be reused; and
  • Working with suppliers to assure optimum packaging profiles for raw materials, and intermediate and finished products to reduce potential packaging waste compatible with required product protection.

Minimizing packaging waste through our value chain: Packaging plays a critical role in maintaining the quality and safety of our products throughout our value chain. We evaluate and define our packaging needs with an intent to minimize packaging volumes while increasing recycled content of packaging and recyclability.

As per provisions 9 (1&2) &13(2) of PWM Rules 2016, as amended under 3.2.1 PWM through Own Distribution Channel Soulflower follows EPR Action Plan Details for Plastic Waste Collection and Processing.

We use sustainable packaging which is recyclable and reusable, we are striving to become a Zero Waste and Negative Carbon footprint company by 2025.

  1. Position on Anti-Corruption

Corruption includes practices such as bribery, facilitation payments, fraud, extortion, collusion, and money laundering; and the offer or receipt of gifts, loans, fees, rewards, or other advantages as an inducement to do something that is dishonest, illegal, or represents a breach of trust. As the India’s 1st Preservative Free Brand, producing thousands of clean beauty and personal care products. At Soulflower, we are committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity and ethical culture. We also advocate for good corporate principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, anti-bribery and anti-corruption in industry codes and elsewhere.

  1. Position on Corporate Governance

Corporate governance refers to the framework of principles, policies and practices that define a company’s approach to oversight and accountability to ensure that company operations align with the long-term interests of its shareholders and are responsive to broader stakeholders. We believe that strong corporate governance is critical to the appropriate management of risk and the creation of long-term value for all stakeholders. Our Board of Directors oversees our business to ensure that our strategy is in line with Our Credo values, enabling us to grow in a compliant manner that adequately manages risk. Our governance structure, policies and processes are designed to support the needs of our business, shareholders and other stakeholders, and to promote a culture of accountability across Soulflower.

  1. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Policy

Soulflower and all its operating companies are committed to workforce diversity, creating equity across our systems and fostering and advancing a culture of inclusion. We know that bringing diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives together drives innovation. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy, along with our Global Strategy, sets out the principles and requirements by which Soulflower will enhance diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the organization. The policy is applicable—but not limited—to our practices and policies on recruitment and selection; compensation and benefits; professional development and training; promotions; transfers; social and recreational programs; layoffs; terminations; and the ongoing development of a work environment built on the premise of gender and diversity equity. The Policy applies to all employees and anyone conducting work on behalf of Soulflower. Our strategy is based on three pillars:

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Vision:

  1. Position on Employee Development

Companies have a unique opportunity to influence the personal and professional development of the individuals they employ. Investing in developing the knowledge and skills of employees is a key tool for the achievement of business goals and objectives, and also helps increase employee motivation and retention. We aim to attract and retain the most talented people to help us advance our purpose of providing people with clean beauty and personal care products. To make their best contribution, our employees must be equipped with knowledge and skills, and should be motivated by the prospects of new challenges or career development opportunities. The opportunity to develop personally and professionally is a core aspiration both for employees who have newly joined our organization and for those who have been part of the Soulflower family for several years. Our learning culture supports developing and retaining our talent. Throughout the year, employees are encouraged to focus on growth by creating development plans, having career conversations with managers, and taking action to build their skills and broaden their experiences.

  1. Position on Employment and Labor Rights

Employers impact people’s lives in very meaningful ways. This impact extends not only to our direct employees and the employees of our business partners, but also to their families, communities and the broader society in which they live and work. While our country has many laws governing employment and labor rights, an employer’s influence extends well beyond the provisions of laws and regulation, encompassing many different aspects of a person’s life throughout their employment lifecycle. For example, fair and equitable compensation; inclusive, safe and healthy working environments; learning and development programs; and opportunities to progress and make a contribution to local community life are just a few of the areas in which people experience the potentially transformative effects of employment on their lives. We deeply care about the individuals who form our Soulflower family and we know that, when we practice values-based, responsible, ethical and inclusive employment, they are motivated and empowered to contribute at their best. This enables us to have confidence in our ability to attract and retain the most talented people, engage them in meaningful and inspiring work, and as a result, deliver our business goals and objectives.

Our ability to succeed depends on every individual in our Soulflower team contributing at their personal best, and it is our responsibility to our stakeholders to create and maintain the conditions that empower them to do so.

At Soulflower, we believe in respecting and supporting the thousands of individuals who, every day, help fulfil our vision and mission. We believe in the value of all individuals and their inalienable rights as represented in the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the principles defined in the International Labor Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. We believe in upholding our employees’ rights as individuals in the workplace and in helping them thrive and prosper throughout their lifetime. We celebrate the richness that a diverse workforce brings to our businesses, and to each of us as individuals, and we practice inclusion so that everyone can be heard, recognized and rewarded. We believe in supporting our employees in their personal and professional development and in helping them thrive as people, employees, family and community members, and pillars of a responsible and just society. We support our beliefs with actions by:

Maintaining a respectful and supportive culture for all

A workplace is more than somewhere to complete tasks. It’s first and foremost a place of human interaction and collaboration, where we strive to achieve shared, meaningful goals. By insisting on respect for all, and by genuinely showing we care about each other, we instil a culture that welcomes diversity, celebrates individual contribution and empowers each to be at their best. Deliberately fostering a respectful and caring culture is the backbone of our approach as a responsible and ethical employer.

Compliance with employment laws

We strive to ensure that all employment complies with all applicable laws and regulations, including those concerning hours of work and rest, compensation, equal opportunity, human rights and working conditions.

Upholding labor rights

We respect, uphold and promote adherence to fundamental and universally accepted labor rights. Our support for the right of children to a childhood free of work responsibilities. We prohibit the employment of young persons (under the age of 18) anywhere in our business.

We do not tolerate discrimination based on characteristics such as age, gender, race, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religious beliefs or any other dimension of diversity. We believe a place of work should be a safe haven for all, where individuals have no fear of expressing themselves freely and respectfully. We strictly prohibit all forms of harassment, including sexual harassment, physical or mental punishment, and other forms of abuse in any part of our operations.

Providing fair compensation

We are committed to compensating our employees fairly and to offering the kinds of benefits that are relevant to meet the needs of today’s employees and their families. Through our compensation framework, a set of core principles that guide all compensation decisions, we recognize the important, contribution of our employees. We observe legal minimum wage provisions and aim to exceed these. Our benefits packages aim to improve the quality of life for employees by providing insurance for health (including Covid-19 coverage) and long-term financial management needs.

Maintaining health, safety and wellbeing in the workplace

We have a shared interest with our employees in their safety at work at all times and their ability to invest in their health and wellbeing while in our employment. We believe employees do their best work in a clean, orderly and safe environment. We therefore invest in maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, fully complying with applicable workplace safety and industrial hygiene standards as mandated by law.

  1. Position on Ethics and Compliance

Corporations play a significant role in society, and their actions can have far-reaching effects on people and communities. In order to protect people and guarantee a level playing field among corporations, laws and regulations governing the activities of corporations are in place. Ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations is a fundamental duty of corporations and their governance. Ethical conduct represents the behaviours required of all those who conduct business, based on appropriate values and guidelines that reflect the spirit of the law, and not merely on specific regulations. Companies that operate in line with high standards of ethical and compliant conduct protect people, communities and their own business from risk, and establish a strong basis for sustainable business over time.

At Soulflower, we are committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity and ethical and compliant conduct.

  1. Position on Human Rights

At Soulflower, we are guided by a set of core principles that serve as a moral compass for how we conduct business. These principles outline our obligations to our customers, our employees, our communities with a common value that the fundamental rights and dignity of all people must be respected. While it is the duty of governments to protect the rights of their citizens, we recognize that businesses also have a critical role to play. We believe we have an opportunity to positively impact the protection of human rights within our sphere of influence. To this end, along with our trade organization and industry alliance partners, we encourage and support our suppliers and other business partners in their efforts to act in accordance with internationally recognized human rights standards. We recognize that human rights due diligence is a continuous process, and we have policies, processes in place in furtherance of this commitment.

  1. Position on Environmental Health and Safety Management

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Management refers to the practices that protect environmental health and safety for the people in and around our workplaces—key elements of being a responsible corporate citizen and a resilient business. Strong EH&S Management requires clear systems and processes, especially in large businesses with multiple manufacturing and logistics facilities, that enable risk-based assessment and control of environmental impacts and health and safety hazards. In many cases, regulation defines minimum standards, and EH&S Management systems must therefore support compliance, as well as drive continuous improvement and learning.

Soulflower is committed to creating safe and healthy places for people to live, work and thrive. Our EH&S Management approach is risk-based, proactive, systematic and responsive to change. Our EH&S Management approach is how we ensure compliance with our EH&S Policy and Standards. We do this through a global and integrated approach to the management of environmental health and workplace safety that includes the following elements:

Legal Compliance: Legal compliance is foundational to our license to operate and a prerequisite for EH&S excellence.
