Stress Induced Hair Thinning? Here's What You Should Know!

Wondering if stress is the cause of your hair issues?

While hair thinning can be caused by a multitude of internal and external factors (hint: not just genetics!), there are some telltale signs that it’s related to stress. These include increased shedding, hair coming out in clumps, and feeling like your hair is thinner all over rather than just at the hairline or part.

What causes stress-induced hair thinning ?

Everyday stressors like
- Living through a pandemic
- A bad breakup
- An accident
- Work pressure
- A fast-paced lifestyle
- Sleep deprivation

This is also known as Telogen effluvium. It is a common and less severe type of hair loss, the hair stops growing and lies dormant, only to fall out 2 or 3 months later.

What is Telogen effluvium

There are approximately 100,000 hair follicles on the adult scalp. Each hair follicle is constantly cycling between growth and rest. The majority of these hair follicles are in the growth phase (anagen) at any given time. When the hair follicle transitions to telogen, or the resting phase, the hair is shed. During an episode of telogen effluvium, a trigger causes a sudden, abnormal shift of hairs into the telogen phase all at once.
